Kinja'd!!!18

Sort of. We all get Jemba notes at the start of the rally, but we do get a single pass recce during which we can modify them as we see fit, or if we prefer write our own notes from scratch. In the case of Ken and Alex they copy the Jembas into a different book in a much larger font prior to the recce, written in pencil (erasable) with plenty of room between lines to add notes. They don't change as much as drivers who started off doing notes from scratch (namely drivers like Higgins, Orders, and Sterkyx [sic]), but Alex is an extremely skilled and experienced co-driver, who started off doing rallies all over Italy before coming to the states and being paired with Ken, so he knows his shit. In the case of the hard dirt pile it's just that it was hidden in the weeds. Nobody had it in their notes, even the drivers who do notes from scratch. Higgins hit it too, despite having scratch notes, difference was he didn't hit it as hard and was able to save the car.

Window nets aren't used in rally, even at the WRC level. Mostly because of the constant need to pass things like time cards through the window (three times per stage). Ken's car has high impact plastic windows (Lexan or similar), much tougher than safety glass (which most rally cars have), and 99% of the time it remains in place and intact. It looks like this was that 1% crash where the window just popped out.

Kinja'd!!!1

Not really, and there's not standard thing. There is what you *should* do and then there is what you actually do because: a) shock, b) shock, c) shock and surprise, d) all of the above tenfold. Ideally, driver should keep his hands on the wheel or on his chest and co-driver should just brace himself, hands on chest. But instincts or rather reflexes are bitch, so you'll see co-drivers reach above their heads when cars start rolling, even though they're safely strapped. Alex was just caught up and then the pendulum and gravity took over. Lucky bastard!

I think perhaps you haven't been keeping up with Ken's results. He lead every rally last year, and it was mechanical issues, not crashes, that kept him from winning the first three events. He then won the subsequent three rallies, and it was this missing pace note that cost him the seventh win and the title.

Previous years I would have agreed with you regarding Ken's talents, but over the past year or so we've seen a different driver. Better, faster, and more consistent. Even the established O.G. rally people, the ones who have been in the sport for 20+ years, are calling him "New Ken Block"
